Corporate social responsibility of oil and gas industry enterprises has become the focal point of the conference, which featured examples and prospects of social partnership, education, and environment protection. АРЕС was organised by Iteca, an exhibition company of Kazakhstan, together with its international partner, ITE Group Plc (UK), which for 17 years running have been staging KIOGE, the major oil and gas forum in Kazakhstan and the Caspian region. The event was sponsored by such well-known companies as Tengizchevroil and FMC Technologies.
“Choosing Social Partnership in the Oil and Gas Sector as the topic for the conference proceeded from the results of industry development and government policies on the whole. We believe that АРЕС is especially relevant now that we are going through a difficult time as, demonstrating the examples of social projects implemented by major companies, it will urge social responsibility to become a governing aspect in the management strategies of big business,” said Yuri Borodikhin, Executive Director, Iteca. As is known, the keystones of a company’s social responsibility are provision of safe labour conditions for personnel, employees’ health protection using a medical insurance system, human resources development through education and training programmes, environment protection by means of introducing an integrated management system, and goodwill projects. The APEC conference programme consisted of a series of sessions devoted to the above issues and featured 20 speakers. The conference delegates and speakers included representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Environment Protection of Kazakhstan, KazMunaiGas National Company JSC, KazMunaiGas Exploration & Production JSC, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions of 10 countries accredited in Kazakhstan. The Partnership and Investments in the Field of Education Section listened to a report made by Paul Brummell, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
11 organisations participated in APEC with display stands demonstrating both implemented and prospective corporate social responsibility projects, including scientific and technical research, educational programmes, and much more. All of the world’s largest oil and gas companies are represented in Kazakhstan. Since the moment Kazakhstan gained independence, the oil and gas industry has been the crucial element of the country’s economic and political development. Today, this sector, apart from its main activities, takes an active part in implementation of priority government and industry-wise social-oriented programmes, international and national socially important events. Every year, leading companies channel funds for the development of social-purpose facilities: schools, medical and preschool institutions, health centres, rehabilitation centres for disabled persons, culture and sports facilities. These bright examples of corporate social responsibility are worth general recognition and strongly need to be supported by mass media and such large-scale events as APEC 2009.
The event is planned to be held once every two years. The next APEC Exhibition & Conference will take place in April 2010.
